Obituary: Former Arizona Opera Technical Director Peter Nolle Dies

Arizona Opera’s former technical director Peter Nolle has passed away.

Nolle suffered a heart attack while bike riding in his native Germany, where he traveled with his family for the holidays.

Nolle, who was born and raised in Hamburg, Germany, studied fine arts and scenic design and worked as Set Designer in multiple Theatres in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

He went on to design sets and costumes for operas, musicals, and theatre plays, as well as for the ballet.

He would eventually become the scenic designer and Head of the Workshops with Theatre St. Gallen in Switzerland for seven years. He then moved to Phoenix, Arizona with his family in 2012 and became the Technical Director and Scenic Designer at the Arizona Opera Company from 2012 to 2017.

In the United States, his first design was in “Don Pasquale” and he went on to design such operas as “Don Giovanni” (2016), “Florencia en el Amazonas” (2015), and “Falstaff” (2016).

He is survived by his wife, Angela, and two children.
