Obituary: Bayreuth Festival Tenor Peter Maus Dies 74

German tenor Peter Maus died at the age of 74.

The tenor died of a brief illness in his adoptive city of Berlin.

Maus was born in Bayreuth and became a member of the Deutsche Oper Berlin from 1974 to 2013 where he performed such roles as Isèpo in “La Gioconda.” Belmonte and Pedrillo in “Die Entführung aus dem Serail,” Ferrando in “Cosi fan tutte,” Count Almaviva in Il Barbiere di Siviglia,” Jaquino in “Fidelio,” Beppo in “I Pagliacci,” Remendado in “Carmen,” and Brighella in “Ariadne Auf Naxos,” among others.

He became a member of the Bayreuth Festival Ensemble in 1981 where he performed for 20 years in a wide variety of roles and in 1995, he was appointed honorary professor at the Berlin University of the Arts. On July 2, 2001, he was named a Berlin Kammersänger.
