Obituary: Bass Carsten Sabrowski Dies

Bass Carsten Sabrowski has died.

Born in Kiel, his family moved to Chile at the age of three and lived there for 10 years. He returned to Germany and studied singing in Hamburg and Berlin.

He won the Elise-Meyer Opera and Song contest and in 1992, he made his debut as Masetto in “Don Giovanni” in Dortmund and became an ensemble member at the Komische Oper Berlin in 2003.

He became well-known for his roles as King Treff in “The Love of the Three Oranges,” Kaspar in “Der Freischütz,” Joe in “The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny,” and the four villains in “Les Contes d’Hoffmann.”

Throughout his career, he also performed at the Hamburg State Opera, the Teatro Liceu in Barcelona, ​​Staatstheater Wiesbaden, Oper Leipzig, Teatro Carlo Felice Genova, Liceu Barcelona, Teatro Municipal Santiago de Chile, and Bayerische Staatsoper.

In his bio with the Komische Oper, he said, “My father is an opera singer. My brother is an opera singer. And our wives are also opera singers. And it’s all the fault of bossa nova. Or rather: South American folklore.”

Throughout his career he made several recordings such as Verdi’s “Requiem” and Dvorak’s “Requiem.”
