Obituary: Baritone Alberto Rinaldi Dies at 84

On August 17, 2023, Alberto Rinaldi died at the age of 84.

The funeral is set to be held on August 19 at the church Cristo Re in Viale Mazzini. He was the son of the Music Critic Mario Rinaldi and brother of Maurizio Rinaldi and brother-in-law of Franca Valeri.

Rinaldi was known as “Dado” and made his operatic debut in Spoleto in the title role of “Simon Boccanegra.” He went on to sing at the Teatro La Fenice, Teatro all’Opera di Roma, and Teatro Regio di Torino.

His Teatro alla Scala debut opened doors for him at the Royal Opera House, Opera de Paris, Metropolitan Opera, La Monnaie, Wiener Staatsoper, and Glyndebourne.

Rinaldi dedicated his career to roles by Mozart, Cimarosa, Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti, Verdi, and Puccini and performed with Claudio Abbado, Daniel Barenboim, Carlo Maria Giulini, Antonio Pappano, Georges Pretre, and Wolfgang Sawallish.

He also performed in productions by Franco Zeffirelli, Luca Ronconi, Jean Pierre Ponnelle, and Michel Hampe.

Rinaldi went on to record a number of albums including “Il Matrimonio segreto,” “La Rondine,” “Il Signor Bruschino,” “Don Giovanni,” “La Scala di Seta,” “Pagliacci,” and “Don Pasquale.”
