Obituary: American Soprano Ruth Falcon Dies at 77

American soprano Ruth Falcon died on Oct. 9, 2020, at the age of 77.

Falcon graduated from Loyola University of the South and Tulane University. She made her first appearance at the New York City Opera in the role of Micaëla in Bizet’s “Carmen.”

Falcon made her first high-profile debut at the Metropolitan Opera House in 1989, in the role of Die Kaiserin in Richard Strauss’ “Die Frau Ohne Schatten.” Her performances at the New York operatic behemoth included the title role in Puccini’s “Turandot,” and Gertrud in Humperdinck’s “Hänsel und Gretel,” among others.

The soprano also performed at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Opéra National de Paris, Wiener Staatsoper, Bayerische Staatsoper, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Teatro la Fenice, Teatro Colón, and Opéra de Monte-Carlo, among others. Falcon had also taken part at the Aix-en-Provence Festival.

Later in her career, she would turn to teaching. She was on the faculty of the Mannes College of Music.
