Numi Opera To Showcase Rare Korngold Work This Winter

By David Salazar

Numi Opera has announced that it will be showcasing Korngold’s “Der Ring Des Polykrates” on Dec. 19 and 22 at the Zipper Hall in Los Angeles, California.

The performance will feature Shana Blake Hill, Scott Ramsay, Roberto Perlas Gómez, Alex Boyer, and Emily Rosenberg. Gail R. Gordon, Executive Director of Numi Opera, will direct the production while Francesco Miloto will conduct.

The work tells the story of Wilhelm Arndt who has everything going for him. He is married and has inherited a small fortune, in addition, to being Hoffkapellmeister. But the return of a jealous friend who convinces him that he must sacrifice something to not challenge fate leads to tragedy within the family.

This is the second opera that the company premieres this year, following Alexander Zemlinsky’s “Der Zwerg.” Of the performance, OperaWire noted that it was a “remarkably satisfying experience.”

“When we planned this season, I wanted to tie our operas as the composers were tied in real life,” stated Gordon in a press release. “That being said, it seemed only fitting that we would begin with the master/teacher Alexander Zemlinsky, the composer of ‘Der Zwerg,’ to Erich Korngold, the wunderkind/student and composer of ‘Der Ring Des Polykrates.’”
