The Norwegian National Opera & Ballet will present Richard Wagner’s “Der Ring des Nibelungen” for the first time at the Oslo Opera House.

The aim is for the tetralogy to unfold across three seasons between 2027 and 2029 in a new production under the direction of Tatjana Gürbaca. Conductor Edward Gardner, in his first ever complete performance of the four-opera epic, will lead a cast headlined by soprano Elisabeth Teige as Brünnhilde.

The cycle will open with “Das Rheingold” on Jan. 22, 2027 and runs through February. That production will feature baritones Yngve Søberg and Johannes Weisser as Wotan and Alberich respectively, tenor Ya Chung Huang as Mime, and mezzo soprano Anna Kissjudit as Erda.

“Die Walküre” will follow in January 2028, “Siegfried” in September 2028, and “Götterdämmerung” will conclude the cycle in January 2029. The company will present the complete tetralogy twice within a single week in the spring of 2029.

“The Ring is one of the defining works in the history of opera, so it is of great significance that we are now able to present the entire cycle in our own opera house,” said Randi Stene, Artistic Director of Norwegian National Opera, per an official press release. “More than 30 years have passed since Der Ring des Nibelungen was last performed in Oslo. This new production marks an important moment for our institution and for Norway’s opera audiences.”
