Norman Garrett & Sasha Cooke to Headline North American Premiere of Chausson’s ‘Le Roi Arthus’

By David Salazar

Bard SummerScape has announced that it will present the first fully staged American production of Chausson’s “Le Roi Arthus.”

The Chausson work will run for four performances starting on July 25 and continuing through July 28, 2021. Audiences will also get to live stream the opera on the official Bard SummerScape website.

The opera will star Norman Garrett in the title role, Sasha Cooke as Guinevere, Matthew White as Lancelot, and Brandon Cedel as Merlin. Other cast members will include Justin Austin, Andrew Bidlack, Wei Wu, and Andres Acosta. Audiences will witness a production by Louisa Proske, the founding co-artist director of Heartbeat Opera and designated Associate Artistic Director and Resident Director of Germany’s Halle Opera, conducted by Leon Botstein.

“Le Roi Arthus” represents Chausson’s lone opera, which was composed between 1886-95. The opera had its posthumous premiere in 1903 in Brussels and has since been performed in Edinburgh and Brussels.
