The Norwegian National Opera is set to present the world premiere of Missy Mazzoli and Royce Vavrek’s “The Listeners” starting on Sept. 24, 2022.

The opera, which runs through Oct. 9, will be directed by Lileana Blain-Cruz, the Resident Director at Lincoln Center Theater. Ilan Volkov will conduct a cast starring Nicole Heaston, Simon Neal, Eirik Grøvedt, and Frøy Hovland.

The work, which was co-commissioned and co-produced by Opera Philadelphia and Chicago Lyric Opera, will focus on themes of social rejection, abuse of power, echo chambers, and “the global hum.”

“’The Listeners‘ is an opera that is in dialogue with our 21st century experience, a work that seeks to illuminate what it means to be a citizen of the world right now,” Vavrek said in an official press statement.

This is the latest collaboration between Mazzoli and Vavrek following such works as “Song from the Uproar,” “Breaking the Waves,” and “Proving Up.”
