The Houston Grand Opera has announced that it will present an in-person live event.

“My Favorite Things: Songs from The Sound of Music” will take place at the University of Houston’s TDECU Stadium on May 8, 2021 and will be headlined by soprano Jeanine De Bique and Michael Mayes, as well as the cast of the company’s originally programmed production of “The Sound of Music;” the Rodgers and Hammerstein show was canceled due to the ongoing concerns over COVID-19. The performance will also feature the Houston Grand Opera Orchestra.

The performance represents a major partnership between the opera company and the University of Houston.

“I could not be more excited to reunite at University of Houston with our audiences this May,” said HGO Artistic and Music Director Patrick Summers in a press release. “While the HGO Digital season has shown us, brilliantly, how much the virtual realm has to offer, there is nothing in this world like being in the physical presence of incredible operatic voices. I’ve missed it so much, and I know our audiences have too. But this time, opera artists won’t be the only ones singing. We’ll all be joining together, singing these iconic songs that celebrate unity and perseverance. I can think of nothing more appropriate after all this time apart.”

Additionally, the company announced that it would be holding several virtual events, including a concert headlined by De Bique and the Houston Grand Opera Orchestra. The showcase will focus on music by Handel and Mozart. The virtual event is scheduled for May 14, 2021.

Another event will feature Nicole Heaston in the latest edition of “Live from The Cullen.” The soprano will perform music by Copland, Gershwin, and Floyd. The stream will take place on April 9, 2021.

The HGO Digital series will feature the chamber opera “Marian’s Song,” which had its world premiere in March 2020. The opera was composed by Damien Sneed to a libretto by Deborah D.E.E.P. Mouton. The filmed version of the work will star Zoie Reams in the title role with Tina B portraying the role of Neveah. The film will be presented on April 30, 2021.
