The Theater Basel in Switzerland has announced its 2020-21 season.

For this article, we will only highlight the opera productions.

Premieres

The first production of the season will be “Im Flow der Apokalypse.” The production will showcase students of universities for music and design as they transform art for 13 days in a small stage walk-in installation.

Benedikt von Peter stages Olivier Messian’ “Saint François d’Assise” with Clemens Heil conducting.

Performance Dates: Oct. 15-Nov. 8, 2020

Simon McBurney brings his delightful production of Mozart’s “Die Zauberflöte” to the Theater Basel. Soprano Regula Mühlemann sings the role of Pamina in the acclaimed production. Francesc Prat and Thomas Wise conduct. 

Premiere Date: Nov. 21, 2020

Muda Mathis, Sus Zwick, Fränzi Madörin, Chris Regn, Marcel Schwald, Sibylle Aeberli, David Kerman, Dorothea Schürch, Sibylle Hauert, Chris Hunter, Lukas Acton, and Christina Volk star in “Alte Tiere Hochgestapelt.”

Premiere Date: Dec. 3, 2020

Caterina Cianfarini directs Puccini’s “Gianni Schicchi” with a cast that will include ensemble members. Hélio Vida conducts.

Premiere Date: Jan. 8, 2021

Verdi’s “La Traviata” will be directed by Benedikt von Peter and will star Nicole Chevalier in the title role. Tito Ceccherini conducts.

Premiere Date: Feb. 12, 2021

Krystian Lada and Katarina Bradić star in Monteverdi’s “Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria” with Johannes Keller conducting. 

Premiere Date: March 6, 2021

Herbert Fritsch stages Strauss’ “Intermezzo” with a cast that includes Rachel Harnisch and Günter Papendell. The work will be conducted by Clemens Heil. 

Premiere Date: April 18, 2021

Ivor Bolton conducts Romeo Castellucci’s “staging of Mozart’s “Requiem.”

Performance Dates: May 20-June 27, 2021

Oliver Rudin conducts “Im Nebel.”

Premiere Date: Jan. 7, 2021

Every third Friday of the month, the company will present Nachtcafé.
