Nicole Chevalier, Günter Papendell & Anne Sofie von Otter Headline Theater Basel’s 2021-22 Season

The Theater Basel has announced its 2021-22 season.

For the purpose of this article, we will focus on opera productions only. Here is a look:

Mozart‘s singspiel “Die Zauberflöte” will open the season. The opera stars Kai Kluge and Alex Banfield in the role of Tamino, Kali Hardwick as Pamina, Rainelle Krause as Die Königin der Nacht, and Patrick Zielke in the role of Sarastro. The cast is rounded out by Andrew Murphy, Kyu Choi, Judith van Wanroij, Ena Pongrac, Jasmin Etezadzadeh, Álfheiður Erla Guðmundsdóttir, André Morsch, Karl-Heinz Brandt, Paull-Anthony Keightley, and Mkhanyiseli Mlombi. Francesc Prat and Thomas Wise conduct the production by Simon McBurney.

Performance Dates: August 22, 2021 – Feb. 23, 2022

Richard Strauss‘ opera “Intermezzo” will showcase Günter Papendell, Flurina Stucki, Moritz Emil Rehlen, Kali Hardwick, Michael Laurenz, Karl-Heinz Brandt, Hubert Wild, Jasmin Etezadzadeh, Andrew Murphy, Mkhanyiseli Mlombi, Raphael Clamer, and Ena Pongrac. Clemens Heil conducts the production by Herbert Fritsch.

Performance Dates: August 25-Sept. 26, 2021

Alte Tiere Hochgestapelt” features Lukas Acton, Sibylle Aeberli, Eva Buffoni, Nadia Catania, Carmela Calvano Forte, Emily Dilewski, Christoph Gantert, Sibylle Hauert, Chris Hunter, Dave Kerman, Georgia Knower, Svetlana Korneeva, Fränzi Madörin, Muda Mathis, Evelyn Meier, Doris Monnerat, Esther Randegger, Chris Regn, Heike Roggenkamp, Cécilia Roumi, Doro Schürch, Pio Schürmann, Marcel Schwald, Christina Volk, Lisa Westermann, and Sus Zwick. The dramaturgy is by Niels Nuijten.

Performance Dates: August 27-Sept. 24, 2021

4½ Jahreszeiten” showcases Daniele Pintaudi, Martin Hug, Frank Fannar Pedersen, Javier Rodríguez Cobos, Regula Bernath, Etele Dosa, Simon Lilly, Alex Wäber, Carolina Mateos, Eva Miribung, Georg Dettweiler, and Mara Miribung. Mathias Weibel conducts the production by Thom Luz.

Antú Romero Nunes, Anne Haug, and Lucien Haug’s “Die Mühle von Saint Pain” features the Chor des Theater Basel. Thomas Wise conducts.

Performance Dates: Oct. 22, 2021-March 26, 2022

Monteverdi‘s “Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria” spotlights Jamez McCorkle, Katarina Bradić, Stefanie Knorr, Théo Imart, Rolf Romei, Alex Rosen, Alex Banfield, and Martin Hug. Johannes Keller and Sebastian Wienand conduct the production by Krystian Lada.

Performance dates: Nov. 7, 2021 – Feb. 27, 2022

Verdi‘s “La Traviata” will star Nicole Chevalier in the role of Violetta Valéry, Arthur Espiritu as Alfredo Germont, and Noel Bouley as Giorgio Germont. The cast also includes Ena Pongrac, Jasmin Etezadzadeh, Karl-Heinz Brandt, Kyu Choi, Mkhanyiseli Mlombi, and Andrew Murphy. Tito Ceccherini conducts the production by Benedikt von Peter.

Performance Dates: Nov. 14, 2021-Jan. 8, 2022

Dmitry Shostakovich’s “The Nose” stars Michael Borth, Andrew Murphy, Jasmin Etezadzadeh, Peter Tantsits, Vuyani Mlinde, Karl-Heinz Brandt, Hubert Wild, Frauke Willimczik, Jasin Rammal-Rykała, and Donovan Elliot Smith. Clemens Heil conducts the production by Herbert Fritsch.

Performance Dates: Nov. 27, 2021-March 24, 2022

Mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter will perform the Franz Schubert‘s “Eine Winterreise” in the production by Christof Loy.

Performance Dates: Jan. 22-Feb. 27, 2022

Verdi’s “Don Carlos” will star Nicole Chevalier in the role of Elisabetta di Valois, Nathan Berg as Philippo II, Kristina Stanek as Eboli, and Joachim Bäckström in the title role. The cast will be rounded out by John Chest, Derrick Ballard, Andrew Murphy, Nataliia Kukhar, Alex Banfield, Álfheiður Erla Guðmundsdóttir, and Kyu Choi. Michele Spotti conducts the production by Vincent Huguet.

Performance Dates: Feb. 13-May 21, 2022

Johann Sebastian Bach’s oratorio “St Matthew Passion” showcases André Morsch, José Coca Loza, Nathan Haller, Jasin Rammal-Rykała, Álfheiður Erla Guðmundsdóttir, Beth Taylor, and Jasmin Etezadzadeh. Alessandro de Marchi conducts the production by Benedikt von Peter.

Performance Dates: March 25-June 26, 2022

Alex Banfield, Andrew Murphy, Nataliia Kukhar, Kyu Choi, and Jasin Rammal-Rykała star in Rossini‘s “Il Barbiere di Siviglia.” Hélio Vida conducts the production by Nikolaus Habjan.

Performance Dates: May 8-June 23, 2022

Philip Glass‘ “Einstein on the Beach” spotlights Ixchel Mendoza Hernandez, Diamanda Dramm, Álfheiður Erla Guðmundsdóttir, Suzan Boogeardt, Bianca van der Schoot, and Frank Willens. André de Ridder conducts the production by Susanne Kennedy.

Performance Dates: June 4-24, 2022

Finally, “Trallalali, trallalala!” in a production by Hubert Wild will close the season.
