Nicole Cabell, Daniela Mack, Will Liverman Headline Opera Theatre of Saint Louis’ 2020-21 Season
By David SalazarOpera Theatre of Saint Louis has announced its 2020-21 season, which will feature a wide range of unique experiences.
The company’s digital season will see the Sally S. Levy Opera Center transformed into a filming studio and the company will not only create film versions of major classics, but also three world premieres of 20-minute operas.
The company will also feature some live performances starting in May.
Here is a rundown of what to expect.
The company will present its “New Works, Bold Voices Lab” which will include three commissions by the company. Composers Damien Sneed, Laura Karpman, and Steven Mackey will create new 20-minute operas. The three works will be recorded in April 2021.
The company will also stream an 80-minute reduced version of Puccini’s “La Bohème” starring tenor Ryan Johnson and soprano Avery Boettcher. Roberto Kalb conducts a production directed by James Robinson.

The company will also present “The Pirates of Penzance” in a virtual presentation sent to schools. Angel Riley, Ryan Johnson, and Benjamin Taylor star in the production directed by Shawna Lucey and conducted by Roberto Kalb.

The company will stream a holiday concert featuring traditional carols and famed movie tunes.

Finally, the company will present live performances of several operas, starting with “Harvey Milk.” The opera will be directed by James Robinson and conducted by Carolyn Kuan. Edward Nelson and Alek Shrader star.

The company will also be presenting a double bill of “Highway 1, U.S.A.” by William Grant Still and Verna Arvey alongside Puccini’s “Gianni Schicchi.” “Highway 1, U.S.A.” will star Nicola Cabell and Will Liverman. Gianni Schicchi will star Levi Hernandez.

The company will also present “On the Battlefield of Broken Hearts,” which brings together four short works including “Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda,” Lucrezia,” “Phaedra,” and “La Voix Humaine.” Daniela Mack stars.

Finally, the company will present A Young Artist Showcase with members of Opera Theatre’s Richard Gaddes Festival Artist and Gerdine Young Artist Programs. The program will be curated by Patricia Racette.
