New Zealand Opera Announces Brad Cohen as New General Director

Brad Cohen has been named New Zealand Opera’s new General Director by the Company’s Board. Cohen takes over for retiring General Director Thoams de Mallet Burgess.

Cohen is a known quantity with the Company, working with the organization since 1998. He is known as an internationally recognized conductor and an innovator with a background in digital music technology. Cohen is also well-versed in fundraising, recruitment, and management.

New Zealand opera-goers last saw the maestro pacing the Company’s production of Macbeth in 2022.

Cohen said in an official press statement, “In these times of change and disruption, New Zealand Opera has demonstrated vision and courage in acknowledging and engaging with the issues confronting opera. I look forward to working with the Board and staff in strengthening our connection with communities and audiences, growing our opera ecosystem, celebrating our history, and playing our part in creating a sustainable future for opera in New Zealand.”

The Board Chair, Annabel Holland, added, “After a highly competitive and extensive international recruitment process we are delighted to welcome Brad Cohen as General Director, joining the Company in June. He brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience in the opera sector. Brad has conducted a wide-ranging repertoire throughout the opera houses of the world and has had artistic, managerial, and strategic responsibilities as Artistic Director at West Australian Opera, where he also mentored and coached many artists.”
