New York OperaFest Announces 2022 Slate

New York OperaFest has announced its 2022 edition which will kick off on April 15 and runs for two months and will be headlined by numerous companies.

Kicking things off, the New York Opera Alliance will present its customary opening ceremony and awards concert. Jimmy Van Bramer and Mark Campbell will be the special honorees for the 2022 edition.

Performance Date: April 14, 2022

The American Opera Project Slate

The American Opera Project will present “La Hora de la Estrella” with Suzanne Farrin, Benjamin Moser, and Paolo Fasoli.

Performance Date: April 28, 2022

The American Opera Project will produce “The Brooklyn Cultural District Tour” which will star contralto Nicole Mitchell.

Performance Date: May 7 & 14, 2022

The company will also present “Composers & the Voice: First Glimpse World Premiere,” which will feature music by Gabrielle Herbst, J.E. Hernández, Raquel Acevedo Klein, Tidtaya Sinutoke, and Ania Vu. Performers include Justine Aronson, Jasmine Muhammad, Max Potter, Aaren Rivard, Mario Diaz-Moresco, and Kofi Hayford.

Performance Dates: May 21 & 22, 2022

The final item on the company’s schedule for the festival will be “Losing Control,” a series of operas by such composers as Sean Havrilla, Ella Yoon, Teresa Lotz, Danny Ursetti, Zach Catron, Mark T Evans, Erin Hoerchler, Henco Espag, Julio Vaquero, Ben Ginsberg, Angelique Mouyis, and Pablo Concha; librettists on the projects include Peyton Marion, Troy Defour, Vaibu Mohan, James Salem, Jessie Field, Andi Lee Carter, Andrew Strano, Dani Koenig, Clare Bierman, Mikey Rosenbaum, Gabe Caruso, and Momo Akashi. Performers include Ariadne Grief, Brittany Fowler, Laura Virella, Lucas Bouk, Kris Königin, Amelia Watkins, and Jordan Rutter, among others.

Performance Dates: May 26 & 27, 2022

Finally, The American Opera Project will spotlight “MSM Opera Theatre: Contemporary Opera Enssemble.” The production will be headlined by Jessica Rudman, Kendra Preston, Djordje Nesic, Miriam Charney, and Kristen Kemp.

Performance Dates: May 4 & 5, 2022

Bronx Opera Slate

Bronx Opera will present “La Clemenza di Tito” in English with such aritsts as Alexis Rodda, Barbee Monk, Perri di Christina, Devony Smith, David Charles Tay, Steven Wallace, Ashley Larkin, Alina Tamborini, Elisabeth Harris, Emily Hughes, Benjamin Howard, and Jonathan Harris.

Performance Dates: May 14 – 22, 2022

Chelsea Opera’s Slate

Chelsea Opera will kick things off with a production of “The Medium” starring Madison Karten, Campbelle Stencel, McKenzie Rybka, Katherine Craig, Maxwell Anderson, and Julianne Stein, among others. 

Performance Dates: April 15 & 16, 2022

Chelsea Opera will showcase “Songs of Summers Past” with such artists as Bradley Bickhardt, Joanie Brittingham, Sarah Daniels, Richard Hobson, Chad Kranak, Leonarda Priore, and Jestin Pieper.

“As Chelsea Opera’s first live performance in 20 months in New York City, we were so bursting with ideas, we couldn’t bring you just one. ‘Songs of Summers Past’ is a concert inspired by fond thoughts back to warmer days, when the world held so much promise and love was at the doorstep,” the company said in an official release.

Chelsea Opera will also showcase Tom Cipullo’s “The Parting.” The opera will star Peter Kendall Clark, Laura Dixon Strickling, and Sarah Heltzel.

City Lyric Opera’s Slate

City Lyric Opera will present “The Garden of Alice” with Laura Soto-Bayomi, Nathaniel Mattingly, Kelly Guerra, Robert Feng, Ramon Gabriel Tenefrancia, Gileann Tan, and Mary Rice. This run represents the U.S. premiere of the work.

Performance Dates: May 17-20, 2022

Opera Lafayette’s Slate 

Opera Lafayette will present “Silvain” which will be conducted by Ryan Brown and directed by Tania Hernández Velasco. The cast includes Camille Ortiz, Victor Sicard Dolmon, Samantha Louis-Jean, Teresa Castillo, Jehú Otero, and Nathan Berg.

Performance Dates: June 7, 2022

Next up is “The Musical Salon of Marie Antoinette.” Nicholas Phan and Sophia Burgos headline the performance.

Samantha Louis-Jean Sophia Burgos, Sishel Claverie, Victor Sicard, Jonathan Woody, and Jehú Otero headline “Concert Spirituel Aux Caraïbes.”

Performance Dates: June 9, 2022

Opera Praktikos’ Slate 

Jeffrey Mandelbaum, Heather Hill, Elyse Anne Kakcek, Hans Tashjian, and Hai-Ting Chinn headline “Orlando: Hero of Love.”

Performance Dates: May 27 – June 11, 2022

Regina Opera Company’s Slate 

“La Bohème” will star Heejae Kim, Christopher Trapani, Lindell Carter, Kimberly Lloyd, Dilara Unsal, Liza Brycce, Peter Hakjoon Kim, Jim Hoe, Nathan Bahny, Jennifer Gliere, Cate Webber, and Arina Ayzen.

Performance Dates: May 10 – 22, 2022

United Theater Company No. 61 

The company will present two operas in development including Avner Finberg’s “Exagoge” and Nell Carter Cohen’s “The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus.”
