New York City Opera Announces Casting For ‘Stonewall’

By Nicole Kuchta

The New York City Opera has announced casting for its upcoming world-premiere production of Iain Bell and Mark Campbell’s “Stonewall.”

The new opera will feature Andrew Bidlack, Liz Bouk as Sarah, Lisa Chavez as Maggie, Michael Corvino, Jessica Fishenfeld, Marc Heller as Larry, Brian James Myer as Carlos, and Jordan Weatherston Pitts as Renata. Leonard Foglia will direct, and Carolyn Kuan will conduct. Additional casting, and the design team, will be announced at a later date.

“Stonewall” will be “the first opera to feature a transgender character specifically created for a transgender singer,” according to the press release. The setting is a hot night in 1969 at a dance club in Greenwich Village, where a cross-section of characters are thrown together “with explosive results that give birth to a movement.” A continuation of New York City Opera’s Pride Initiative, the opera is an LGBT-focused work produced in commemoration of Gay Pride Month.

Five performances will run from Jun. 21 – 28, 2019 at The Rose Theater of Jazz at Lincoln Center.
