New Camerata Opera has announced that it will present “La Tragédie de Carmen” as its fall 2024 production.

The work by Peter Brook and Marius Constant is a stripped-down version of Bizet’s famed opera that centers on the four main characters of the work – Carmen, Don José, Micaëla, and Escamillo.

For the fall production, which is set to take place Nov. 21 – 24, 204 at Rose Nagelburg Theatre at Baruch College, the company is bringing in director John de los Santos to lead the production alongside conductor Michelle Rofrano.

De los Santos has directed productions with Santa Fe Opera, helios Opera, Lyric Stage, LoftOpera, Arizona Opera, Ashlawn Opera, and San Diego Opera, among many others. Rofrano has led operas at Toledo Opera, Madison Opera, Fargo Moorhead Opera, City Lyric Opera, The Juilliard School, and Opera Saratoga, among others.
