New Amsterdam Opera To Perform ‘Herodiade’

By Francisco Salazar

The New Amsterdam Opera has announced that this Spring it will present Massenet’s “Herodiade.”

The company announced via social media that the opera would be presented on May 10 at the Center at West Park and that a cast would be announced at a later point.

This is the fourth opera that the company is offering since its inception in 2016. The company has since presented “Fidelio,” “La Forza del Destino” and “La Favorita.”

OperaWire raved last season when it called the “company one to keep an eye out for” after its “La Favorita” presentation.

“Herodiade” is a work that has rarely been performed throughout but singers as Renée Fleming, Plácido Domingo, Cheryl Studer, Thomas Hampson, and Dolora Zajick have recorded it in the past.

The Opera Orchestra of New York performed the work in 1995 with Fleming, Grace Bumbry, and Eduardo del Campo. According to the Metropolitan Opera archives, the work has never been performed at the famed company.
