NEMPAC & Boston Festival Opera to Co-Present ‘Le nozze di Figaro’

By Logan Martell

On June 9, 2023, The North End Music & Performing Arts Center Opera Project (NEMPAC), in collaboration with Boston Festival Orchestra, will present “Le nozze di Figaro.”

Held at the Dante Alighieri Society of Massachusetts in Cambridge, the production will take the work to a 1950s American setting. This marks the second collaboration between NEMPAC and BFO, following their sold-out performances of Sondheim’s “Into the Woods” in 2022.

The cast includes Cynthia Lopez Perez as Susanna, Raphael Laden-Guindon as Figaro, Juan Suarez as The Count, Sarah Rogers as The Countess, Kathryn Tolley as Cherubino, Mary Kray as Marcellina, Will O’Brien as Don Bartolo, Tyler Cesario as Don Basilio and Curzio, and Christina Goslin as Barbarina.

“’Le nozze di Figaro’ has been brought to the stage again and again for over 200 years for a reason: the timeless themes of class struggle, romance, comedy, and a libretto set to some of the most moving and memorable music ever written,” says Director Brenda Huggins. As a theater maker, I am interested in stories that challenge us to reflect on our culture and the status quo, and encourage a more equitable and just society. Our production set in the mid- 20th century explores these themes with a modern lens, inspired by colorful pop art from the era that protests the hierarchy of ‘fine art,’ much in the same way that Figaro and Susanna challenge the Count’s status and power.”

The production will have a second performance the following night on June 10. Tickets are available beginning at $35, with student tickets at $25.
