National Youth Orchestra to Present ‘Ode to Joy’ Across UK

By Logan Martell

On April 17, 2020, National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain will be staging a nationwide effort to bring music to communities kept inside their home during the coronavirus epidemic.

The NYO is inviting every interested musician in the UK for a mass performance of Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy,” as a gesture of solidarity in a time of distancing.

As per a press release, the showcase will kick off at  5 p.m. on April 17, 2020. The National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain’s 164 musicians will throw open their windows, “get out on their doorstep,” and present a 40-second rendition of the famed Beethoven piece.

This will be preceded by days of meeting via “digital residency” with musicians playing together in small groups, creating multi-track videos, and connecting with one another musically, with the aim of establishing resources and guidance for everyone participating in the Ode to Joy-a-thon at home.

In addition to the live performance, on April 16, 2020 at 7:30 p.m., BBC Radio 3 will present an archive recording of NYO and the National Youth Choir performing Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 at the BBC Proms.
