National Symphony Orchestra Announces ‘In Your Neighborhood’ Concerts

By Francisco Salazar

The National Symphony Orchestra’s longest-running community engagement initiative, “In Your Neighborhood” will bring NSO musicians to Takoma Park, Sixteenth Street, Shepherd Park, Petworth, Brightwood, and Crestwood.

The initiative will be held between Feb. 13 and 19, 2025, and gives access to free, live music beyond the Kennedy Center.

On Feb. 13, Principal Pops Conductor Steven Reineke will conduct the National Symphony Orchestra accompanied by mezzo-soprano Marquita Raley-Cooper at the Sligo Seventh-day Adventist Church. This concert will feature Farhad Poupel’s “Fanfare for Common Heroes,” Karen LeFrak’s “SPACE,” and Kennedy Center Composer-In-Residence Carlos Simon’s “Fate Now Conquers.”

Then on Feb. 17, the NSO will perform at Raymond Recreation Center in a program led by conductor and Music Director of the MacArthur Award-winning Chicago Sinfonietta, Mei-Ann Chen. This performance includes two world premieres by composers Catherine Elizabeth and Charles Lumar II.
