National Sawdust’s Sparks & Wiry Cries Unveil Upcoming February 2025 Events
By David SalazarNational Sawdust’s Sparks & Wiry Cries will present two events this February.
On the 7th, the organization will showcase its ninth annual “songSLAM” which showcases the talents of 15 composers, singers, and pianists premiering songs. The event will also spotlight the work of 2024 songSLAM winner Jonathan Wyatt.
Here is a breakdown of the teams. The first team features composer Zachary Sloan, soprano Victoria Poritkin, and pianist Neill Campbell. Pianist Stephanie Baird, composer Joshua Bornfield, vocal artist Michael Manganiello, and publisher / poet Tom Haviv.
Team three includes vocalist Ann McDonald Weible and composer Braden Allison, while team four is comprised of composer Me Huskin, pianist Jialiang Li, and vocalist and stage director Elisheva Pront.
For team five, audiences will see the work of composer, soprano, and educator Elizabeth Gartman; poet, librettist, and writer Susan Bywaters; performer Laura Whittenberger; and pianist, conductor, and composer Austin Philemon. Mezzo Katie Trigg, voice coach and pianist Reese Revak, and composer Leigha Amick are at the heart of team six, while soprano Alexandria McNeely, pianist Chun-Hsin Liu, composer Kristen Baum, and author Sarah Ann Winn represent team seven.
Conductor, composer, and educator Laura Nevitt headlines team eight alongside baritone Juan Suarez, and pianist Jacob LyteHaven, while, team nine features the talents of multi-hyphenate countertenor Jordan Rutter-Covatto, librettist / composer Fred Sauter, soprano Sydney Anderson, and conductor / pianist / music director Mila Henry.
Marcus DeLoach and pianist Grant Loehnig are team 10 while vocal artist / composer (and beatboxer) Justin Cheung leads team 11, which also features songwriter Olivia Lai, pianist Leona Cheung, and contralto Hana Yiu. The members of team 12 include soprano Claire Galloway, composer / poet Erik Franklin, and pianist John Henderson.
Team 13 includes singer / songwriter / scholar Gelsey Bell, and musician David Friend. Also joining them is Anthony Gatto, a visual and literary artist. Singer Paul Max-Tipton, pianist Molly Morkoski, composer Deborah Mason, and poet Robert Scotto comprise team 14.
Finally, team 15 includes composer / lyricist Patrick Michael Wickham, multi-hyphenate mezzo-soprano Hilary Baboukis, and pianist Mark Wagner.
The next day, Sparks & Wiry Cries teams up with Vital Opera for “Meltdown,” aa one-act work for mezzo-soprano and piano trio by Stefan Weisman and David Cote and Hai-Ting Chinn. Chinn performs.
Both events kick off at 7:30 p.m.
