National Sawdust to Showcase World Premiere of Anthony Roth Costanzo’s ‘COUNTERTENOR’

By David Salazar

National Sawdust will present the world premiere of “COUNTERTENOR,” featuring Anthony Roth Costanzo.

The showcase, set for April 17-18, 2025 at the National Sawdust, will feature an exploration of the famed voice from a historical perspective with music by John Dowland, The Four Seasons, Philip Glass, Osvaldo Golijov, Claudio Monteverdi, Thomas Morley, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Klaus Nomi, and Antonio Vivaldi, among others, all arranged by Dan Schlosberg for a 15-piece ensemble.

“This constellation of music represented in this concert all emerged while I was writing a forthcoming book on the public history, and my personal history, of the countertenor voice. With it, I feel I am exploring the relationship between my high voice and antiquity, gender, pop culture, humor, rigor, self expression, and memory,” Costanzo said per an official press release.

Also collaborating on the project will be smell researcher and artist Sissel Tolaas, who will showcase five distinct, abstract smells that will connect with Costanzo’s personal and artistic identity.

The world premiere is presented in partnership with Bayer/Kultur and SMELL RE_searchLab Berlin, with additional support from Symrise.
