National Sawdust to Showcase Winners of New Works Commissions

By Logan Martell

National Sawdust has announced its New Works Commissions, a series of world premieres featuring works from winning composers, to be performed by the JACK Quartet and National Sawdust Ensemble. Also in this vein is their New Works Composer Sessions, a series of nine weekly broadcasts that speak to National Sawdust’s commitment to supporting and educating artists. The company will also be partnering with The Kennedy Center for its Arts Across America digital performance series.

Over the course of the year, National Sawdust has given a platform to over 100 artists through their Digital Discovery Platform. The winning 20 composers will be featured in two online performances and will receive $3,000 each for their commissioned works. The first will be on Dec. 10 with the National Sawdust Ensemble, with the JACK Quartet performing the following night.

The New Works Composer Sessions will be made available on National Sawdust’s Facebook page from Sept. 17 to Nov. 12, 2020. The 20 winners will also participate in a Q&A for each weekly session, with industry leaders discussing topics such as composition, curation, collaboration, improvisation, music criticism, recording, intellectual property, women leadership, creating a Pulitzer Prize-winning work, and more.
