National Sawdust Announces Plans For 10th Anniversary Season

National Sawdust, the women-led, Williamsburg, Brooklyn-based non-profit has released the details of its 10th anniversary season.

For the purposes of this article, only classical vocal works are included.

Co-founder and artistic director Paola Prestini, and Royce Vavrek’s opera “Silent Light,” which is based on the 2007 film by Carlos Reygadas, opens the season.

Performance Date: September 26–29, 2024

Soprano Measha Brueggergosman-Lee stars in Aaron Davis’s “Zombie Blizzard,” a classical concert aria and jazz-influenced art song set to the poetry of Margaret Atwood.

Performance Date: October 28, 2024

Baritone Will Liverman presents a 30-minute song cycle of his own compositions.

Performance Date: December 8, 2024

Starting 2025 is Helga Davis’s “The Messenger: A Nativity Tale For Now.” Kaneza Schaal directs.

Performance Date: January, 2025

Vivian Fung’s song cycle, “Living in the ‘In-Between’” considers Chinese-American identities against the backdrop of escalating societal hostilities during the pandemic. Soprano Andrea Núñez serves as soloist.

Performance Date: January, 2025

Suzanne Farrin and Sergio Chejfec’s electro-sonic operatic experience, “Macabéa,” based on Clarice Lispector’s “The Hour of the Star,” examines the cultural, psychological, and spiritual manifestations of poverty and power

Performance Date: Spring, 2025

The world premiere collaboration between Anthony Roth Costanzo and the American Modern Opera Company (AMOC) explores the use of synesthesia and interdisciplinary ideas. It is directed by Zack Winokur.

Performance Date: April, 2025

Composer Sxip Shirey and choreographer Coco Karol’s site-specific choral and movement piece, “We Don’t Need the Sea to Drown” is performed.

Performance Date: June, 2025
