
Nathan Felix to Premiere ‘La Gran Esperanza’
By David SalazarComposer Nathan Felix will present the premiere of his immersive opera “La Gran Esperanza” on Oct. 10 at the Blaffer Art Museum in Houston.
Presented by the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center at the University of Houston, Felix, the production is site responsive. Vocalists and musicians perform throughout the museum and move among the audience, who are encouraged to follow the soloists or explore the space by sound and sight. Jilin Dong conducts.
The cast features mezzo-soprano Sarah Dyer Jones and three singers from the Moores School of Music opera program: baritone Joshua Thomas, soprano Julia Starr, and tenor Jonatán Reyes. The ensemble includes violinist James Pickens, violist Mei Hsun Ho, cellist Revolution Felix, percussionist Arthur Giligan, and the Greater Houston Brass Choir, led by Jenn Watts.
The performance kicks off at 7 p.m. local time.
