
Natasha Agarwal, Namrata Shah, & Jason Sandeep Star in New Opera ‘Medea Gosperia’
By Afton MarkayThee Black Swan and Kay Hammond’s new opera “Medea Gosperia” takes place July 2 – 20, at the Cockpit Theatre in London.
Set against a Caribbean backdrop, “Medea Gosperia” retells Euripides’ classic Greek tragedy through styles of gospel, opera, lovers rock, and jazz. sopranos Natasha Agarwal and Namrata Shah perform the title role (alternating), with tenor Sandeep Gurrapadi as Jason. Also among the cast is Amanda White, Oscar Dom Victor Castellino, Tom Murphy, Alistair Scott, Livia Ledda, Livi Wollaston, and Hannah Neilson–Bonini.
Joseph Charles, founder of Thee Black Swan and director of the show, said in a press release, “Euripides wrote a play thousands of years ago whichis as relevant today as it was then. I wanted to work with the ensemble to represent our different rhythms, to show that all music is equally valuable and should be accessible to all. Medea is a complex and powerful character at the helm of this dramatic and emotional theatrical voyage.”
