Nancy Manocherian’s the cell theater to Stage World Premiere of JL Marlor’s ‘Final Veil’

By Chris Ruel

JL Marlor’s “Final Veil” is set for its world premiere at Nancy Manocherian’s the cell theater on July 14, 2022. The show runs through July 31.

This queer and women-led “movement opera” is an amalgam of theater, opera, and dance.

“Final Veil” relates the true story of Franceska Mann, a Jewish-Polish dancer who showed defiance and courage amid the horrors of the Holocaust. When told to undress before going into the gas chamber at Auschwitz, Mann, using a diverting striptease, grabbed a gun, killed one SS guard, and injured a second before her demise.

The performance spotlights four women singers and a live string quartet, with music drawn from Polish folk song, German cabaret music, contemporary classical, underground jazz, and 1930s Yiddish folk songs.

The production helmed by Cassandra Rosebeetle and conducted by Micah Gleason features vocalists Katie Lipow, Abagael Cheng, Heather Michele, Katherine Lerner Lee; ensemble dancers Hallie Chametzky, Lauren Pagano, Lauren Barette; choreography by Katherine Crockett and Cassandra Rosebeetle. Comprising the string quarter are violinists Connie Li and YoonJung Hwang, violist Katya Barmotina, and cellist Camille Dietrich.
