Nadine Sierra Reveals Met Opera ‘La Sonnambula’ Almost Didn’t Happen
By Francisco SalazarNadine Sierra made interesting revelations in a new interview with Bachtrack.
The soprano revealed that she almost didn’t sing the role of Amina in “La Sonnambula” due to her old manager, Gianluca Macheda, at GM Art and Music, who wanted to push her to sing heavier repertoire. The soprano had previously spoken about it during an interview with the New York Times when she was singing “La Sonnambula.”
After singing the work in Madrid and Barcelona, the production at the Met was suddenly canceled. She told the online news site, “This production was cancelled without my knowledge. I didn’t realize that my ex-manager had gone behind my back in 2023 to Peter Gelb [the Met’s General Director] to cancel it on my behalf. I just happened to have a meeting with Peter afterwards, which I’ll never forget. The first thing he said was ‘I’m so upset that you feel you can’t sing Amina anymore and you’ve cancelled it!’ I was in shock.” She went on to note that Gelb immediately called Met Artistic Administrator Michael Heaston and others in the administration to get the production back.
The soprano also revealed that Peter Geb has asked her to repeat the “Lucia di Lammermoor” production by Simon Stone, which received mixed reviews.
The soprano also revealed that she is going to take her time adding repertoire and said that she has already been offered Norma after “La Sonnambula,” but first she will do “Maria Stuarda” and see how that goes. Depending on that role, she will try “Anna Bolena.” The soprano noted that she will use the same strategy for Verdi. If “Luisa Miller” feels good for her, she will look at the Leonora in “Il Trovatore” and Desdemona in “Otello.” She also noted that her dream role in the French repertoire is “Thais.”
