Musica Viva NY to Stream ‘Songs of Struggle, Compassion and Redemption’

By Logan Martell

On January 23, 2022, Musica Viva NY will present “Songs of Struggle, Compassion and Redemption.”

The concert will feature Aeolus Quartet, with the program comprised of Joel Thompson’s “Seven Last Words of the Unarmed,” as well as works by Bach, Trent Johnson, George Walker, and Florence Price.

The event will be presented virtually from All Souls Church due to the rising cases of COVID-19, with some of the artists and creators set to participate in a small post-concert discussion.

“We are thrilled to be working with Joel, whose powerful vision in composing this work inspired Artistic Director Alejandro Hernandez-Valdez to curate a program around the themes of compassion and empathy,” said Executive Director Danielle Buonaiuto in an official press statement.  “It’s always been our goal to present innovative, musically excellent programs, but we are also committed to programs that reflect the preoccupations and priorities of our community, and perhaps allow some space for catharsis and collective healing — now more than ever.”
