Music of Remembrance to Spotlight Struggles of Japanese During World War II

By David Salazar

Music of Remembrance has announced an online program aimed at honoring the Japanese experience during World War II.

Between June 22 and 28, the company will stream Christophe Chagnard’s “Gaman,” a work that focuses on the captivity that many Americans of Japanese ancestry had to endure.

The work combines Western and Japanese instruments with testimonies and images by three artists and poets, including Suma Yagi, Roger Shimomura, Kamekichi Tokita, and Takuichi Fujii, who experienced captivity in the Minidoka camp.

Soprano Ann Moss and baritone Erich Parce will perform in “Gaman.”

Meanwhile, between August 3 and 9, the company will stream pieces by Shinji Eshima and Ryuichi Sakamoto that highlight the fears of the nuclear age following the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

These performances will be available on the company’s official website.
