Museum of Modern Art & Met Opera Present ‘Frida and Diego: The Last Dream’

By David Salazar

The Museum of Modern Art will open “Frida and Diego: The Last Dream,” an exhibition of works by Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera from MoMA’s permanent collection, on March 21, running through September 12, 2026.

The exhibition is presented in conjunction with the Metropolitan Opera’s premiere of “El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego,” which runs May 14 through June 5. The opera carries a score by Grammy Award-winning composer Gabriela Lena Frank and a libretto by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Nilo Cruz.

MoMA has invited Jon Bausor, the opera’s set and co-costume designer, to create a theatrical installation framing the artworks, drawing on his designs for the production alongside the visual language of Kahlo and Rivera themselves. The exhibition will include six paintings and a drawing by Kahlo, over a dozen works by Rivera, and photographic portraits of both artists by photographers including Lola Álvarez Bravo and Leo Matiz.

The Met Opera’s production is set to star Isabel Leonard, Carlos Álvarez, Nils Wanderer, and Gabriela Reyes.
