By David Salazar

The Teatro Jorge Eleicer Gaitan and the Sinfónica Nacional de Colombia, in collaboration with Asociación Izmir, will present Astor Piazzolla’s “María de Buenos Aires” on April 14 and 15, 2023.

The opera will star Mónica Danilov in the title role, alongside Carlos Guitierrez as the Duende, and Leonardo Estévez as the Payador. The production, which is directed by Hyalmar Mitrotti, will feature the Anfibia Teatro Chorus and dance group Alma de Tango.

Danilov recently took on the role of Maria with Opera Columbus in her company debut this past February; that production marked the first Spanish-language opera in the Columbus area.

This production won the Ópera al Parque 2019 prize. Mitrotti, in addition to directing, is also a bass who has performed in numerous opera productions at the Teatro Mayor Julio Mario Santo Domingo with Ópera de Colombia.
