Miren Urbieta Replaces Maite Alberola In ‘Turandot’ At Teatro Real

By Francisco Salazar

UPDATE Per the Teatro Real’s Press Office: “Artistic director, Joan Matabosch, contracted Ms. Alberola, almost three years ago, to perform Liù, he thought that her voice would evolve in a different way. During the rehearsals of “Turandot,” Mr. Matabosch and the soprano agreed that it would be better not to go on with Liù now and to offer her another role in the future.”

Maite Alberola will no longer sing the role of Liù in the cast of “Turandot” at the Teatro Real.

According to Platea Magazine, during rehearsals Nicola Luisotti decided to relieve the soprano of her commitment with the production. As a result, Miren Urbieta will take over Alberola’s performances.

Urbieta recently sang the role of Liù at the Palau de les Arts and was Ines in “La Favorite” at the Gran Teatre del Liceu.

The new cast change is the second this week for the production as Nina Stemme canceled all performances of “Turandot” due to illness. As a result, Irene Theorin and Oksana Dyka replaced her.

Turandot opens on Nov. 30 and runs through Dec. 30, 2018. The opera also stars Gregory Kunde and Roberto Aronica as Calaf, and Yolanda Auyanet as Liu. Andrea Mastroni sings Timur with Nicola Luisotti conducting.
