Miina-Liisa Värelä & Clay Hilley Lead Canadian Opera Company’s ‘Fidelio’

By Francisco Salazar

The Canadian Opera Company is set to open its 2023-24 with Beethoven’s “Fidelio.”

The opera, which will run from Sept. 29 to Oct. 20, 2023, will be directed by Matthew Ozawa.

In a statement, the director said, “I would say the biggest takeaway [I would hope for audiences] is that someone comes away from Fidelio reminded that they have the power, as an individual, to create and ignite change. That, facing any sort of injustice or situation in which they feel otherwise powerless, they realize that they, like Leonore, can find the same power to bring about change.”

The cast will include Finnish soprano Miina-Liisa Värelä, American tenor Clay Hilley, Canadian soprano Anna-Sophie Neher,  Russian bass Dimitry Ivashchenko, German baritone Johannes Martin Kränzle, Canadian tenor Josh Lovell, and Serbian bass Sava Vemić. COC Music Director Johannes Debus conducts the COC Orchestra.
