Michaela Schuster Replaces Sarah Connolly In Met Opera Ring

By Francisco Salazar

Sarah Connolly has canceled her participation in the Metropolitan Opera’s upcoming Ring Cycle.

The company announced that Connolly would not sing the role of Waltraute in “Gotterdammerung.” As a result, Michaela Schuster will replace her in all performances of the run.

Schuster made her Met debut last season as Klytämnestra in Strauss’ “Elektra” garnering rave reviews. OperaWire noted, “As Klytämnestra, Michaela Schuster impressed mightily in her belated Met debut. She has a massive instrument that carries throughout the hall with boundless resonance, especially in the lower range where she spends most of her time in this part.”

“Gotterdammerung” is set to open April 27 with Christine Goerke singing the role of Brünnhilde and Stefan Vinke and Andreas Schager alternating the role of Siegfried. Philippe Jordan will conduct the run.
