Michael Fabiano & Elīna Garanča Lead Major CD / DVD Releases Of the Week
By Francisco SalazarFive new Cds and DVDs are set for releases this week. Audiences will get a chance to hear a solo album debut, two rarely performed operas, and two crossover CDs. Here is a look!
Attila
Verdi’s “Attila”‘ from the Teatro Comunale gets a release on C major. The January 2016 by Daniele Abbado, stars Maria José Siri, Ildebrando d’Arcangelo in the title role, Fabio Sartori, Simone Piazzola, and Michele Mariotti.
Verdi-Donizetti
Pentatone releases the eagerly anticipated solo debut of Michael Fabiano. The Verdi/Donizetti album features eleven tracks from ”Luisa Miller,” “Rigoletto,” “Lucia di Lammermoor,” “Oberto,” “I due Foscari,” “Poliuto,” and “Maria di Rohan.”
The album also features an “Ernani” scena written for tenor Nicola Ivanoff and an aria for Alvaro from the original St. Petersburg version of “La Forza del Destino.” The London Philharmonic Orchestra led by Enrique Mazzola joins the tenor who will donate 10 percent of his proceeds from the CD to ArtSmart, a not-for-profit foundation he co-founded, which gives children in underserved communities access to free one-on-one music lessons.
Sol y Vida
Elīna Garanča’s latest album for Deutsche Grammophon features a number of popular Spanish songs such as “La Llorona,” “Granada,” “El día que me querias,” and “Gracias a la vida.” She also interprets a number of Italian works such as “Marechiare,” “Non ti scordar di me,” “Non t’amo più,” “Torna e Surriento,” and “Core ‘ngrato.”
The album will also feature the famed romanza “No puede ser” from the zarzuela “La Tabernera del Puerto.” Karel Marek-Chicon and the Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria accompany the mezzo with Guitarist José María Gallardo del Rey, who is also featured on the new CD.
Vaccaj: Giulietta e Romeo
Leonor Bonilla and Raffaella Lupinacci star in Vaccaj’s rarely performed work in a production from Valle d’Itra. When OperaWire saw the production, we noted, “It really was a well-paced, and visually pleasing production that successfully captured the love and hatred which drives the narrative forward.”
Dynamic releases the opera on DVD, CD, and Blu-Ray.

The album’s songs represent the most admired Italian and international songwriters of today, including Cheope Mogol, Paolo Marioni, Antonio Galbiati, Eugenio Vinciguerra, Jeff Franzel, Vincenso Incenzo, Peppe Arezzo and Fernando Alba.
