Peter Gelb has revealed upcoming projects for Aigul Akhmetshina at the Metropolitan Opera.

In an AP News interview, the General Manager said he has great hopes for her and noted, “Aigul has a rich and gorgeous voice, strong theatrical instincts and presence, and the courage to go for it all on stage…Everything in opera is a risk, but Aigul is as close to a sure thing as there is.”

Gelb noted that he has already hired her for Rosina in Rossini’s “Il Barbiere di Siviglia” and Dalila in Saint-Saens’ “Samson et Dalila.”

The mezzo which has been described as the “New Netrebko,” hopes to sing Princess Eboli in Verdi’s “Don Carlo,” and in 10 years she wants to sing Amneris in “Aida” and Azucena in “Il Trovatore.”

Akhmetshina opens a new production of “Carmen” on Dec. 31, 2023 at the Metropolitan Opera.
