Metropolitan Opera & National Sawdust to Present ‘Opera Evolved: Genre Fluidity’

By David Salazar

The Metropolitan Opera is joining forces with National Sawdust to co-present a concert centered on excerpts from Paola Prestini’s upcoming opera “Sensorium Ex.”

The event, which is part of the “Opera Evolved” series, features such artists as J’Nai Bridges, Hailey McAvoy, stage director Lileana Blain-Cruz, and Brenda Shaughnessy (librettist of “Sensorium Ex”), as they alternate between performance and discussion. Prestini will also be on the discussion panel during the event. Ana de Archuleta will moderate the discussions.

Per Prestini’s official website, “Sensorium Ex” is ” multi-modal arts project exploring fundamental questions of what it means to have voice, and the nature of voice beyond language.” It is scored for six principals, mixed chorus of 12, and chamber orchestra and electronics. It is commissioned by VisionIntoArt and Beth Morrison Projects.

In addition to excerpts from “Sensorium Ex,” audiences will also hear moments from “El Niño,” which is set to be presented at the Met later this season.

The event is set to take place on Feb. 22, 2024.
