The holiday season is in full swing with most opera companies closing their doors. But there are still a few companies that are celebrating the season with their own unique offerings. Here are the top six operas to see this weekend with your family and friends.

Amahl and the Night Visitors  – Greensboro Opera, North Carolina

The holiday tradition will continue with a performance of the famed Menotti opera in North Carolina. Audiences can check out a performance on Friday and Sunday at the Well-Spring Life Plan Community with a Saturday show set for the Edward C. Smith Civic Center.

Der Rosenkavalier, The Queen of Spades, The Magic Flute – Metropolitan Opera

The Met Opera consistently presents opera throughout the holiday season and this is no exception. While we have already recommended these operas in past weekends, we can’t avoid doing so again. “The Queen of Spades” is a fascinating opera that rarely gets Met showcases, while “Der Rosenkavalier” has not been presented at this level of quality in quite some time. “The Magic Flute” is perfect for the family.

El Milagro del Recuerdo – Houston Grand Opera, Texas

The holiday opera, which stars Cecilia Duarte, Daniel Noyola, Miguel de Aranda, Vanessa Alonzo, and Rafael Moras, among others, will end its run on Friday night. This mariachi opera is a unique experience that will undoubtedly be the ideal prelude to the holiday season.

All is Calm – Opera Orlando, Florida

Starting on Friday, Opera Orlando will showcase a unique opera experience that showcases the night during World War I when soldiers from both sides came together to celebrate Christmas Eve. The work will feature Chad Johnson, Brandon Morales, Edward Washington, Brent Doucette, Chadley Ballantyne, Lloyd Reshard, Gavin Wald, and Brandon Evans. There will be three other performances throughout the weekend for a total of four.
