Metropolitan Opera Confirms Two New Works

The Metropolitan Opera has confirmed two upcoming new works.

In an Instagram post, the company said, “Missy Mazzoli is composing an opera based on George Saunders’s ‘Lincoln in the Bardo,’ with a libretto by Royce Vavrek, which is slated to premiere at LA Opera in early 2026 and arrives at the Met in fall 2026. Mason Bates is writing an adaptation of Michael Chabon’s ‘The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay,’ with a libretto by Gene Scheer. Bates’s opera has its world premiere at Indiana University this fall before coming to the Met.”

The news comes a few months after Indiana University announced that it would be co-producing the Bates work when the LA Opera canceled plans to present the world premiere due to financial issues.

It also comes after the Cincinnati Opera and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music announced it would workshop “Lincoln in Bardo” in the company’s joint program, “Opera Fusion: New Works.”

The new works are part of the Met’s plan to bring new works to the company following such operas as “Fire Shut Up in My Bones,” “Champions,” “The Hours,” and the upcoming “Grounded.”
