Metropolitan Opera Announces New Cast Change for ‘Carmen’

By Francisco Salazar

Piotr Beczala has withdrawn from the second performance of “Carmen” on Jan. 3, 2024, at the Metropolitan Opera.

The company said, “Tenor Rafael Davila will sing the role of Don José in Bizet’s ‘Carmen,’ replacing Piotr Beczała, who has withdrawn due to illness.”

Davila sang the first performance on Dec. 31, 2024. Since his Met debut in 2017 as Don José, Davila has also performed the title role of Don Carlo, Radamès in “Aida,” Giasone in “Medea,” and Ismaele in “Nabucco” earlier this season. He has also performed in San Francisco, Barcelona, Washington, and Valencia.

He once again joins a cast that includes Aigul Akhmetshina (Carmen), Angel Blue (Micaëla), and Kyle Ketelsen (Escamillo). Daniele Rustioni conducts the new production by Carrie Cracknell.

Beczała returns to the production on Jan. 5, 2024.
