The Metropolitan Opera has announced that the Eric and Dominique Laffont Competition is expanding to South America.
The company will expand to Santiago, Chile, beginning in the 2025–26 season. The South America Region and the Districts will include Argentina, Chile, and Colombia Districts and will be supported by the partnering organization Fundación Ibañez Atkinson.
The competition will allow singers aged 20-30 to compete during July, and their videos will be evaluated by the Met Artistic staff.
Those who qualify will register for and compete in their districts. Those who advance in the district competition will compete at the regional competition in Santiago, Chile. The winner(s) of that region will compete in the 2026 National Semifinals in New York at the Met in March.
The Met’s Laffont Competition is designed to discover promising young opera singers and assist in the development of their careers and is sponsored by hundreds of donors and volunteers. Previous winners have included Jamie Barton, Stephanie Blythe, Lawrence Brownlee, Anthony Roth Costanzo, Emily D’Angelo, Michael Fabiano, Renée Fleming, Susan Graham, Ryan Speedo Green, Lisette Oropesa, and Nadine Sierra.
