Metropolitan Opera Announces Cast Change for ‘Porgy and Bess’

By Francisco Salazar

The Metropolitan Opera has announced a cast change for its performances of the Gershwins’ “Porgy and Bess” on Nov. 6 and 10, 2021.

The company noted that Maria will be sung by Tichina Vaughn, replacing Denyce Graves.

Vaughn will return to the role which she stepped into earlier this week on Nov. 3 for the second performance of the run. The mezzo made her Met debut in 1990 as Lily in “Porgy and Bess” and has performed in productions of “La Traviata” and “Rigoletto.” This season she performed the Hostess of the Inn in “Boris Godunov” for which OperaWire wrote, she “had a fine mezzo.” She will also sing the First Maid in “Elektra” later this season.

Vaughn will join a cast that includes Angel Blue, Eric Owens, Frederick Ballentine, Latonia Moore, Alfred Walker, and Ryan Speedo Green. David Robertson conducts.

Graves returns to the production on Nov. 13, 2021.
