By Francisco Salazar

The Metropolitan Opera has announced a cast change for its upcoming production of Mussorgsky’s “Boris Godunov.”

The company announced that Ryan Speedo Green will take over the role of Varlaam replacing the originally announced Stanislav Trofimov.

Green made his Met debut in 2012 in a production of “Turandot” and returns this season for productions of “Porgy and Bess,” “La Bohème,” and “Ariadne auf Naxos.”

The bass-baritone will join a cast that includes René Pape in the title role, David Butt Philip, Maxim Paster, Aleksey Bogdanov, and Ain Anger. Sebastian Weigle conducts the production by Stephen Wadsworth.

The opera is being presented in its original 1869 version, which runs two-and-a-quarter hours with no intermission. “Boris Godunov” opens on Sept. 28 and runs through Oct. 17, 2021.
