The Metropolitan Opera has announced a cast change for its March production of Strauss’ “Ariadne auf Naxos.”

The company noted that Wolfgang Brendel, who retired from staged opera eight years ago, will jump in for Thomas Allen as the Major-Domo in the production.

Brendel made his debut at the Met in 1975 as Count Almaviva in “Le Nozze di Figaro” and has sung 91 performances there through 2007 in Mozart, Verdi, Wagner, Puccini, J. Strauss, and R. Strauss.

Marek Janowski conducts the production which stars Lise Davidsen in the title role, Brenda Rae, Isabel Leonard, Brandon Jovanovich, Sean Michael Plumb, and Johannes Martin Kränzle.

“Ariadne auf Naxos” is set to open on March 1 and run through Marc 17, 2022. The March 12 performance is set to be shown live in HD.
