The Metropolitan Opera has announced that Eleonora Buratto will take over the role of Elizabeth de Valois in the 2022-23 production of “Don Carlo.”

Buratto will replace Anna Netrebko, who the company broke ties with over her previous support of Vladimir Putin. Buratto will sing the first five performances of the production before Angela Meade will take on the final four performances of the run. The opera opens on Nov. 3, 2022.

She joins a cast that stars Günther Groissbock, Anita Rachvelishvili, Peter Mattei, and Russell Thomas. Carlo Rizzi conducts.

Buratto is in the midst of a run of “Madama Butterfly” at the Met. Of her performance, OperaWire wrote that “Buratto sounded as fresh and poised here as she did at the start of the evening, her voice as passionate as ever, but her timbre as beautiful as ever.”
