On Oct. 20, 2019, Gluck’s “Orfeo ed Euridice” will return to the Metropolitan Opera for the first time since 2011. The revival will see the return of Mark Morris’ 2007 production.

When the production first opened, James Levine led the production with a cast that included Maija Kovalevska, David Daniels, and Heidi Grant Murphy. That season, the production received four performances and marked the debut of Morris at the Met.

The production would then be revived in 2009 with a cast that included Stephanie Blythe and Danielle de Niese. Grant Murphy would reprise her role as Amore and James Levine would also conduct. The season also featured the production in the Met’s Live in HD series.

That revival also saw Ying Huang sing the role of Amore and Kazem Abdullah make his Met debut at the podium. Seven performances were given that season.

In 2011, Kate Royal would make her long-anticipated met debut alongside David Daniels reprising the title role of Orfeo. Lisette Oropesa sang the role of Amore while Anthony Walker made his debut at the podium. The production would receive five performances.

This season the opera will return with an entirely new cast. Jamie Barton will lead the cast which will also include Met veteran Hei-Kyung Hong and Hera Hysang Park. Mark Wigglesworth will conduct all seven performances.
