The Metropolitan Opera’s General Manager Peter Gelb will be among those receiving honorary doctorates of Musical Arts from the Manhattan School of Music during its commencement ceremony on Friday, May 10, 2019.

Gelb will also give a Commencement address at the Ceremony, which is part of the institution’s 100th anniversary celebration. Gelb will be honored alongside conductor Jane Glover, composer Adolphus Hailstork, and jazz artist Barry Harris.

Gelb became the Met Opera’s 16th General manager back in 2006 and was the man behind the Live in HD series, his big calling card. He has also championed a number of other major initiatives with the Met’s programming and distribution network.

Other Manhattan School of Music Honorary Doctorate recipients include Plácido Domingo, Paquito D’Rivera (MSM faculty), Birgit Nilsson, Wynton Marsalis, Dawn Upshaw (MM ’85), Max Roach (’52), Billy Joel, Angela Lansbury, and MSM Trustee Bebe Neuwirth.
