Merton College Choir Oxford to Tour U.S. This Fall

By David Salazar

The Merton College Choir Oxford is set to tour throughout the East Coast this fall.

The Ensemble will open its tour on Sept. 11, 2022 at Memorial Church of Harvard University in Cambridge, MA. There will be a second concert at the same venue a day later. Then on Sept. 13, the group will perform at Trinity Church on the Green in New Haven, CT.

Then it’s time for New York and New Jersey. On Sept. 15, there will be a performance at Church of St. Ignatius Loyola in New York City; this performance will also be live streamed. A day later, the tour comes to a close at the Princeton University Chapel in New Jersey.

Benjamin Nicholas will conduct a program featuring music by Vaughan Williams, Lionell Rogg, Judith Weir, Byrd, Purcell, David Lang, Nico Muhly, William Harry, Parry, and Duruflé.

“Touring is very important to us on so many levels,” said Music Director Benjamin Nicholas in an official press statement. “Our university terms are quite short, so working together in a concentrated way outside those three eight-week periods is invaluable to the choir’s musical development. It’s also hugely important socially for this age group. I think any of our choral scholars would say that touring is one of the advantages of being in a collegiate choir. We’ve missed that enormously since we last toured in December 2018. The new generation of Merton singers, who joined us in autumn 2019, has never been on tour as a group. That makes this US trip doubly important.”
